Roses Have Thorns is a short horror story by Jude Mason. Rose is a
prostitute who seeks out revenge for a killer who tortures those he seeks
out. On a cold icy night, having rent due, Rose is out on the streets
watching for customers. Fear and desperation are both within her when a car
pulls up to her, remembering recent horror stories about a monster who
cajoled a girl into his car followed by hours of torture, until death
released her from him. With the weather this bad, Rose doubts he would be
out in the night. But she’s wrong and becomes another one of his victims.
Upon dying, Rose's spirit flees her and another spirit comes and takes over
her abused body into a healing process. As this continues, her quest for
vengeance grows stronger. Upon finding him, her payback is violent with
anger together with a long and sexual punishment which will bring the tale
to a flaming ending.
Those who read horror stories will be absorbed into Roses Have Thorns
by Jude Mason. As one who doesn't read horror, this reviewer still had to
keep reading to find out how Rose got her revenge for the killings,
including hers. Chilling and graphic scenes along with difficult and
sensitive issues may not be for some readers. Read with caution! But if
you're looking for a quick scary thriller, look no further!

Rose is a prostitute doing business on an
extremely cold night. She's trying
desperately to stay warm, look sexy and keep her eye out for business and
danger. Danger from a man that is killing prostitutes. When a possible john
pulls up in a van and tells her to get in out of the cold she only thinks
about it for a split second. Long ago she'd stopped enjoying the pleasure of
her job and now it was all about turning over the next trick. Yet, when this
man touches her she finds herself getting more and more excited.
What she doesn't expect is for him to brutally abuse her and kick her out of
his van onto a deserted street. She tries desperately to crawl to get
herself up and dies by a trash can. An entity enters her body, born of
anger, regret and a need to punish, Rose breaths "life" once again and
searches for the john that killed her. She does find him eventually and
begins to exact her revenge.
Even writing this out I see the images that Ms Mason created with this short
story and I shudder. This is not a story for the faint of heart. It is
however a story for anyone that enjoys well deserved revenge. Because once
she finds her john there is no stopping her from seducing him, tying him up
and beating him with her whip.
I liked the character of Rose, I liked the paranormal element that she comes
back to life. Even in her most evil state, Rose touched my heart. Her
character made sense, her revenge was warranted. I enjoyed the outcome just
as much. I did not like Clifford (the john), little sob should die. He
deserved everything he got and maybe then some.
Anyone looking or a quick read that will have their senses reeling and their
squick boundaries tested should read this book. Jude Mason writes with such
accuracy that it can be chilling at times. Thank you Ms Mason for entrusting
this book for my review. I really loved reading it.

Rose is cold, miserable, and alone in a terrible rainstorm simply because
she needs rent money. Despite the local police warnings about a serial
killer targeting prostitutes, she sets aside her native instincts and
intuition and accepts a ride in the warmth of a limo. She lives, and dies,
to regret it, as the only John she met that night was the wrong John. But
Rose is a woman of unexpectedly powerful will, and she is determined to
wreak vengeance, for herself and for the other women, terribly abused and
destroyed. Rose’s vengeance is finely-tuned, indeed!
Roses
Have Thorns
is
doubtless one of the most powerful stories of any length this reviewer has
ever read.
Jude Mason
has a rare imaginative gift which encompasses some of the more twisted and
dark extremes of reality, and this is one fine example. The convolutions of
the plot and the character revelations went far beyond what I had expected
from the blurb, and brought the story to a level with unexpected depths,
rendering it a work I won’t forget for a long, long time-if ever. I highly
recommend this short story, with the caution that readers of delicate
sensitivities might better avoid it.

This being a short story,
I don't want to say too much about the plot, for fear of spoiling it. Not
knowing where this tale is going is very much part of the fun, but it does
making reviewing it a tad tricky.
'Roses Have Thorns' is a
toe-curling piece of erotic horror exploring the extremities of pleasure and
pain in a seriously dark revenge narrative. It's a very nasty idea, played
out with skill and style. Jude Mason's graphic imagery had me wriggling
around in my chair, compelled by the mixture of sexuality and violence.
There's a dash of the supernatural about it, which I liked too, and a fair
helping of poetic justice. Mason is a talented author, able to convey a
great deal with just a few words. I really like her writing style. The
characters a lightly sketched - there's a vast amount we don't know about
them outside of the circumstances of the story, but there's certainly enough
to engage with and to make you care what happens. Motives are not fully
explained, neither are the strange happenings that make the plot go, but
that works. Mason's prose makes it easy enough to suspend your disbelief for
the duration.
If you like to squirm with
revulsion and horror now and then, and if you find horror inherently erotic
then this is a must read. It's a dark, twisted little tale and I loved it.
